Late Thursday night on November 8 into the early morning on Friday November 9, 200,000 residents of the Conejo Valley and surrounding areas were mandatorily evacuated from their homes. A fire that started at Rocketdyne off the 118 freeway near Simi Valley raced thru the open space that connects the 118 freeway to to the 101 freeway late Thursday afternoon. This fire first destroyed homes in Oak Park and Thousand Oaks late Thursday night into early Friday morning. The devestation began to amass.
At 5:30 am Friday morning the fire overtook fire fighters at the Canwood exit on the 101 freeway near Reeds Furniture, and jumped the 101 freeway from the north side to the south side. Once south of the 101 freeway, the fire consumed the brush of the Santa Monica Mountains where Malibou Lake and communities off Kanan Road lit up in flames. The Santa Ana winds raged, and fire fighters were at the mercy of mother nature.
After scorching the hills around Kanan, the fire continued to race into Malibu to level Point Dume and burn the Santa Monica Mountains. Just before leveling Malibu, the winds shifted and the fire headed towards Bell Canyon where it burnt almost the entire community and threatened the San Fernando Valley from West Hills where mandatory evacuations continued to spread.
The fire continued into the next few days where we began to meet residents of our community that lost thier homes.
Our hearts ache as we witness the destruction caused by the flames. Over 600 homes were destroyed and our community has been devestated. This epic fire event a day after the shootings at Borderline in Thousand Oaks leave all of us speechless and remarkebly saddened by both tragedies. Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone affected by both tragedies.
